GENETICALLY MODIFIED CROP

CARNATION FLOWER

Genetically modified crops are those in which the gene of the particular crop is modified in order to alter the characteristics of the particular crop. Let’s discuss the way how the Carnation Flower has been genetically modified and the reasons why it is genetically modified. The Carnation flower is genetically modified in order to change the colour of the flower. It is done by inserting two anthocyanin biosynthetic genes (AminoCyclopropane Cyclase and AcetoLactate Synthase) which create blue flower pigments. As a result of the genetic modification of Carnation, Moonshade, Moonshadow and Moonvista are produced with violet, mauve, purple coloured flowers. The major advantage of this genetically modified carnation is that it provide better resistance to weeds, pests and disease.
